The Use of Three Palatal Flaps during Dental Implant Surgery on Maxilla

|
In dental implant surgery, adequate soft tissue covering is very important for acquiring successful results, especially when the surgery is performed with additional procedures such as bone graft, guided bone regeneration. Also, immediate implant installation and socket preservation after tooth extraction is becoming common procedure. Various surgical approaches have been applied for covering extraction sites. The purpose of this report is to evaluation of applications of three palatal flaps (palatal rotation flap, palatal paralleled flap, palatal semi-lunar flap) for covering soft tissue and reconstruction of soft tissue in dental implant surgery. Subjects were 39 patients who received palatal flap during dental implant surgery. The type and site of palatal flap, clinical application and complications were surveyed on medical record retrospectively. In 28 patients received palatal rotation flap, post-operative complications showed in 14 patients(50.0%), such as wound dehiscence, swelling and others. Failure of bone graft and implant showed in 4 patients(14.3%) and good healing showed in the others. In 6 patients received palatal paralleled flap, post-operative complication showed in 4 patients(66.7%). The failure of bone graft showed in 2 patients. In patients received palatal semi-lunar flap for reconstruction of soft tissue, all sites showed good healing without complications.
